Equal Earth map
This is the Equal Earth map. Every country is drawn at its real size compared with the others, so nothing looks bigger than it really is.
What is the Equal Earth map?
It was made in 2018 by three map makers — Bojan Šavrič, Bernhard Jenny and Tom Patterson. They wanted a world map that keeps every country the right size, but still looks like the world you know.
How is it different from the map on my phone?
Most phone and web maps use Mercator. Mercator is great for finding your way, but it makes places near the poles look huge. Greenland looks as big as Africa, but Africa is many times bigger.
What did the United Nations decide?
In September 2026, countries at the UN voted 164 to 1, with 6 not voting either way, for a plan that calls for using maps like Equal Earth more often when it matters how big places really are.
Using it in class
Your teacher can print this map, and there's a worksheet and a paper globe too.
Questions
What is the Equal Earth map?
It is a flat map of the whole world, made in 2018, where every country keeps its real size next to the others.
Is the Equal Earth map accurate?
It is right about size. No flat map can get everything right, so shapes bend a little near the edges.
Why do schools use it?
So you can see every country at its real size, even the ones near the middle of the Earth, which other maps squash.
Can I print it?
Yes, it is free! Press the print button and it comes out sideways on one page. You can also download it.
